Welcome, Leave, and Autoroles

Build welcome and leave messages, assign autoroles, and coordinate both with verification.

10 min readUpdated Oct 1, 2026

The Welcome and Leave tools send a message when a member joins or leaves. Build the message directly on the Dashboard, or edit a plain text message from the Discord settings. Autorole gives selected roles when a member joins or after they pass verification.

These features belong to Settings and control what happens when a member joins or completes verification.

Set up a welcome message

Choose a public welcome channel or send a private welcome with Direct message. Start with a short message and add member or server variables as needed.

Build a welcome message on the DashboardCreate the message, send a test, and enable it from one page.
  1. Open Dashboard → Welcome & Leave.
  2. Open a Welcome configuration, or select Add to open a new draft, and choose the destination channel or enable Direct message. Use the bottom Save bar to create the configuration, or Discard to leave without creating it. Deleting a saved configuration asks for confirmation in a dashboard modal.
  3. Add text, sections, images, or other message blocks.
  4. Insert member or server variables where needed.
  5. Optional: enable Delay until verified to wait for verification. Enable Delete after ping to remove the welcome message after at least three seconds. Include {{user.mention}} and allow user mentions if you want to ping the member first.
  6. Enable the welcome message and save.
  7. Select Send test and check the configured channel. Test messages also follow Delete after ping. ::: #commands
Set up with /settings welcomeChoose a channel and edit the message text.

  8. Run /settings welcome (or ;welcome).
  9. Use the selector at the top to open a saved Welcome configuration or create one, then select Channel and choose its destination.
  10. Select Message and edit the text.
  11. Select Preview Message to render the complete message privately without sending any pings.
  12. Optional: enable Delete After Ping when the message uses {{user.mention}}. The joining member can be pinged when they join, then Discortics deletes the welcome message after at least three seconds.
  13. Return to the main panel and enable the welcome message.

Discord saves each change immediately.

What these settings can do

  • Build a Components V2 welcome message on the Dashboard.
  • Build a separate Components V2 leave message on the Dashboard.
  • Edit plain message text with variables from Discord.
  • Personalize messages with member, server, inviter, and invite variables.
  • Preview the complete welcome or leave message privately from Discord without sending pings.
  • Send a Welcome Test from Discord or test saved welcome and leave messages from the Dashboard using your real account profile.
  • Configure Ping on Join (PoJ) to notify joining members and automatically delete the welcome message after at least three seconds.
  • Delay the welcome message until verification succeeds.
  • Assign several autoroles immediately or after verification.

Before you begin

  • You need Manage Server to configure these settings.
  • Discortics needs View Channel, Send Messages, and Embed Links in each message channel.
  • Autoroles also need Manage Roles and a bot role above every assigned role.
  • @everyone, the muted role, integration-managed roles, roles above Discortics, and roles with risky permissions cannot be autoroles.
  • When autoroles change, Discortics keeps the muted role above the Member role and every autorole. The save is rejected if that safe hierarchy cannot be established.
  • Use the Dashboard for rich layouts and previews; Discord setup edits plain text with variables.

Welcome Message Limits

Welcome messages per server31025

Each welcome message must use a different channel. The Discord Welcome command opens with no configuration selected; choose Welcome 1, Welcome 2, and so on, or Create new welcome (used/limit). The selector stays above the selected configuration. Use the Dashboard to rename or remove configurations and to build richer layouts. Leave remains a single message.

One Welcome configuration may use Direct message, within the same message limit. It sends privately on join with a disabled Sent from {server name} button. Send test sends to your own DMs. Closed DMs do not disable Welcome for future members. DM welcomes send immediately and do not use Delay until verified or Delete after ping.

In /settings welcome, select Direct message, then enable the message. Select Channel to switch back to a channel destination.

Autorole Limits

ResourcePublicPrimeCustom
Before-verification roles555
After-verification roles555

Configure Autoroles

  1. Run /settings autorole.
  2. Open Manage to configure the Before verification and After verification groups together, even while verification is off.
  3. Save your role selections. Roles can be configured before or after enabling verification.
  4. You can manage the same roles from Dashboard → Settings → Auto Roles.
  • Saving a role picker replaces that group's current selection.
  • Deselect a role to remove it from future assignments.

When Roles Are Assigned

  • With verification off, After Verification roles are assigned on join; Before Verification roles remain inactive.
  • With verification on, Before Verification roles are assigned on join and After Verification roles wait for a successful captcha or password check.
  • Bypassed users skip the check and receive both groups during their join flow.

Important: The Delay option inside /settings welcome affects only the welcome message. Automatic-role timing comes from the group where each role is selected.

Clear Deleted Roles

If an automatic role was deleted from Discord, /settings autorole marks it as deleted. Save an updated selection in that group to remove the missing role without changing the other group.

Clear Automatic Roles

Clear each role selector in /settings autorole.

Warning: Clearing a group stops those future assignments. It does not remove roles already given to members.

Create a Welcome Message

  1. Run /settings welcome or ;welcome.
  2. Select Welcome 1, Welcome 2, and so on, or choose Create new welcome (used/limit).
  3. Select Channel and choose a text or announcement channel.
  4. Select Message.
  5. Edit and submit the message text.
  6. Select Preview Message to render the complete message privately without sending pings.
  7. Optional: select Welcome Test to send the selected configuration's rendered draft to its channel. The direct ;welcome test shortcut tests the first configuration.
  8. Optional: select Delay if the welcome message should wait until verification succeeds.
  9. Optional: enable Delete After Ping when using {{user.mention}} to ping the joining member and remove the welcome message after at least three seconds.
  10. Return to the main panel and enable the message with the status button.

Each Discord change saves immediately.

For quick prefix setup, run ;welcome set #channel. It creates and enables that destination with the default message, or resets the existing configuration in that channel to the default message. Add --msg followed by multiline text to save a simple custom message. Add --delete 3s (or another human duration of at least three seconds) to choose its deletion delay. --msg and --delete may appear in either order.

Opening or cancelling the text editor preserves an existing rich layout. Submitting a text edit replaces the message with plain top-level text; use the Dashboard to keep editing a rich layout. Welcome and Leave messages do not consume saved-message capacity.

Ping on Join (PoJ)

Ping on Join (PoJ)-also known as ghost ping on join or temporary welcome ping-is a setup where Discortics mentions a newly joined member to deliver a push notification, then automatically deletes the welcome message after at least three seconds.

Communities use PoJ to grab the attention of new arrivals-directing them to rules, verification, or server announcements-without leaving hundreds of cluttering welcome messages in public chat history.

Set up Ping on Join on the DashboardEnable Delete after ping and ensure user mentions are active.
  1. Open Dashboard → Welcome & Leave.
  2. Under Welcome Message, choose your designated welcome or arrivals channel.
  3. Add your message content, making sure to include {{user.mention}} in the text.
  4. Under Mention Settings, ensure user mentions are allowed.
  5. Toggle Delete after ping to Enabled.
  6. Optional: enable Delay until verified if your server requires verification before members should receive the ping.
  7. Save your changes with the save bar.
  8. Click Send test to preview the exact behavior. Discortics delivers a test ping using your profile and removes it after three seconds.

The Welcome message builder with Delete after ping enabled

Set up Ping on Join in DiscordConfigure Delete After Ping directly via /settings welcome.
  1. Run /settings welcome or ;welcome and choose the Welcome configuration from the top selector.
  2. Select Channel and select your welcome channel.
  3. Select Message and set a message that mentions the user, such as:
Welcome to the server, {{user.mention}}! Please review <#rules-channel>.
  4. Select Delete After Ping. The button toggles to green (active).
  5. If you use Verification, select Delay to prevent pinging unverified members.
  6. Enable the welcome message on the main panel.
  7. Click Welcome Test on the selected configuration to verify the ping and 3-second deletion. The direct ;welcome test shortcut targets the first configuration.

As a prefix-only shortcut, ;welcome set #welcome --msg Welcome {{user.mention}}! --delete 10s creates or resets that channel configuration and uses a ten-second deletion delay.

How Ping on Join works

  1. A new member joins the server (or completes verification if delay is enabled).
  2. Discortics sends the welcome message to the designated channel.
  3. Because {{user.mention}} is included, Discord fires a mobile/desktop push notification or unread badge for that member.
  4. Discortics queues the message for automatic deletion after the configured duration (three seconds for the dashboard and panel toggle, or the duration supplied to prefix quick setup).
  5. The message is deleted, leaving the channel clean while the member retains their notification.

Important configuration rules for PoJ

  • Include {{user.mention}}: PoJ requires {{user.mention}} in the message. If the member is not mentioned, no notification is sent.
  • Manage Messages permission: Discortics requires the Manage Messages permission in the welcome channel to delete the message after the ping. If this permission is missing, Discortics cannot clean up the welcome message.
  • Verification delay: If your server has Verification enabled, toggle Delay so members are only pinged once they pass verification.
  • Testing PoJ: Test messages sent via Dashboard Send test, the panel's Welcome Test, or the message command ;welcome test all respect Delete After Ping. Discortics uses your real Discord profile (mention, avatar, and join timestamps) and automatically deletes the test message after three seconds.

Create a Leave Message

  1. Run /settings leave.
  2. Select Channel and choose a text or announcement channel.
  3. Select Message.
  4. Edit and submit the farewell text.
  5. Select Preview Message to render the complete farewell privately without sending pings.
  6. Optional: run ;leave test to send a test farewell message to the configured channel.
  7. Return to the main panel and enable the message.

Use the Dashboard for farewell images, sections, links, and other layout blocks.

Leave messages are sent for member departures. They can be used as a public goodbye or a private staff departure log.

Message Options

Status

The first button enables or disables the selected welcome or leave message. Disabling keeps the channel and saved payload.

A message needs all three items before it can send: enabled status, a valid channel, and a configured payload.

Channel

Choose one text or announcement channel. Changing the channel affects future messages only.

Message

In Discord, edit plain text containing supported variables. An actual text submission replaces any existing classic or custom layout; simply opening or cancelling does not change it. Use Dashboard → Welcome & Leave for rich layouts.

Preview and Testing

Preview Message renders the complete saved or draft layout in a private response and suppresses all mentions. It does not post in the configured channel or replace the saved message.

Welcome provides Welcome Test for the selected configuration; the direct ;welcome test command targets the first configuration. Leave supports ;leave test. Test messages populate member variables with your actual Discord profile (username, avatar, mention, account age, and server join timestamps) and send the rendered draft to the configured channel. When Delete After Ping is enabled on Welcome, the test message follows that configuration's deletion duration.

Delete After Ping

Enable Delete After Ping when your welcome message contains {{user.mention}} and you want to notify the joining member without leaving the welcome message in the channel. The Dashboard and Discord panel use a three-second delay. Prefix quick setup can choose another delay of at least three seconds with --delete. See Ping on Join (PoJ) above for setup instructions.

This option applies only to Welcome, not Leave. Discortics needs Manage Messages for efficient bulk cleanup; when that permission is unavailable, it attempts individual deletion instead.

Delay Welcome Until Verified

Enable Delay in /settings welcome to hold the welcome message until verification succeeds. This delay takes effect only while Verification is enabled.

This setting is separate from the Before Verification and After Verification role groups.

Variables

Use the supported names below in message text as {{variable.name}}. The Dashboard also provides variable selection for rich layouts.

Common member and server variables:

VariableResult
{{user.mention}}Mentions the member in text
{{user.username}}Discord username
{{user.globalName}}Display name, falling back to username
{{user.avatarURL}}Member avatar URL
{{user.createdAt}}Full account creation time
{{user.createdAgo}}Relative account age
{{user.joinedAt}}Full server join time, welcome only
{{user.joinedAgo}}Relative server join time, welcome only
{{server.name}}Server name
{{server.memberCount}}Current member count
{{server.iconURL}}Server icon URL
{{server.vanityCode}}Server vanity code

Invite tracking variables are available when Discortics can identify the join or leave source:

VariableResult
{{invite.source}}Invite, vanity URL, unknown, or ambiguous source
{{invite.code}}Detected invite code
{{inviter.mention}}Mentions the inviter
{{inviter.username}}Inviter username
{{inviter.total}}Inviter's total credited joins
{{inviter.real}}Inviter's current real invites
{{inviter.left}}Invited members who left
{{inviter.fake}}Invites classified as fake

When a member joins via a vanity URL or an untracked invite, Discortics attributes the inviter to the server itself: {{inviter.username}} and {{inviter.globalName}} use the server name, {{inviter.avatarURL}} uses the server icon, {{inviter.mention}} displays @ServerName, and {{inviter.total}}, {{inviter.real}}, {{inviter.left}}, and {{inviter.fake}} reflect the server's tracked vanity join counts.

Unknown values render as empty text. Read the Invite Tracking guide before depending on invite variables.

Dashboard message builder

Open Dashboard → Welcome & Leave to manage multiple welcome messages and one leave message. Select Add to create another welcome configuration, then open its editor. Each builder supports both Components V2 and Classic V1 embed modes, text, sections, images, mentions, and the variables listed above.

  1. Give the welcome configuration a clear name and choose its unique destination channel.
  2. Add and arrange the message blocks.
  3. Set which users, roles, or everyone may be mentioned.
  4. Save all pending changes.
  5. Enable the message and select Send test.
  6. Check the configured channel.

The builder checks Discord's component and text limits before saving. Dashboard tests are disabled while changes are unsaved. Welcome also includes Delay until verified and Delete after ping.

Automatic roles are configured under Dashboard → Settings → Auto Roles. Both before- and after-verification pickers are available while verification is off, so roles can be saved before enabling verification.

Reset Welcome or Leave

Select Reset in the matching Discord panel, then confirm. Reset disables the message and removes its channel, payload, and delay setting.

Warning: Reset cannot be undone. It does not delete the saved embed or messages already posted in Discord.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did a new member not receive an autorole?

Confirm that the role remains selected, is below Discortics' highest role, and is not managed by another integration. Discortics needs Manage Roles. Roles in After Verification are assigned only after the member verifies or is bypassed.

Why did the welcome message not send?

Confirm that it is enabled and has both a channel and message. Check Send Messages and Embed Links in the destination. If welcome delay is enabled, check whether Verification is enabled and the member has completed it.

Why did roles arrive but the welcome message did not?

Automatic-role timing and welcome delay are separate controls. Check the Delay setting in /settings welcome and the message's channel permissions.

Why did the welcome message send before autoroles?

Role assignment and welcome-message delivery run independently. Put gated roles in After Verification if they must wait, and enable welcome Delay if the message must wait.

Why did the Ping on Join (PoJ) message not delete?

Ensure Discortics has Manage Messages in the welcome channel. Without this permission, Discord blocks the bot from deleting messages.

Why did the member not receive a notification for Ping on Join?

Verify that your message text contains {{user.mention}}. On the Dashboard builder, check that Mentions allows mentioning users. If Delay until verified is turned on, the ping will not send until the member successfully passes verification.

Can I send a message without a classic embed?

Yes. Discord text edits produce a plain Components V2 message. The Dashboard builder supports both plain text and richer message blocks.

Will editing a saved embed update the configured message automatically?

No. Previously configured messages are independent of generic saved embeds. Edit the active message in Dashboard → Welcome & Leave, or submit a Discord text edit to replace it with plain text.
